Convey These Key Training Points About Conveyor Safety

Powered conveyors are extremely useful time- and energy-savers. But they’re also potentially extremely hazardous—especially to workers without proper training.

Conveyors are one of the earliest forms of automation and are widely used as a means of moving materials efficiently and safely. Cutting down on the amount of materials handled manually can reduce the risks of injury to workers’ backs and hands, among the most commonly injured parts of the body in on-the-job accidents.

But because various sorts and sizes of conveyors have been around so long, they are often taken for granted, and the potential dangers of their use may not be recognized. Also, because they tend to move steadily, smoothly, and perhaps silently, workers may be lulled into a false sense of security around them.

Case in point. A young worker, on the job just a few months, decided to take a short cut over an operating power conveyor rather than walking all the way around. It may have been the dumbest—and saddest—move of his life. His pants got caught in the conveyor, and his leg followed. He survived the accident, minus a leg, which had to be amputated. Probably he learned his lesson. But what terrible way to learn.

Key Training Points

Don’t let your employees learn what they need to know about conveyor safety (or any other safety hazard, for that matter) from a disabling accident. When training workers on conveyor safety, be sure to emphasize these critical points:

  • When objects are manually placed on or removed from conveyors, the worker’s hands may be pinched between the object and the belt.
  • Loose clothing and jewelry worn near conveyors present a risk of serious injury if caught in the mechanism.
  • Workers should never ride on a conveyor or crawl over or under one; only an approved crossover should be used.
  • When a conveyor runs at head height, or carries material hung from hooks, measures must be taken to prevent struck-by accidents.
  • Similarly, precautions must be taken to prevent injury from materials that could fall from a conveyor that runs overhead—for example, wear a hard hat and keep a safe distance.
  • When repairs are needed, conveyors should be stopped, the controls locked out and tagged with “Do Not Operate,” and equipment should be restarted only when all is clear. Repairs should only be made by trained and authorized employees.
  • If it’s necessary to clean belts or drums while the equipment is in motion, barrier guards should be provided at pinch points.

Welcome to the Employee Training Center

Unlike many training solutions available on the market today, BLR’s Employee Training Center courses are routinely reviewed and updated to reflect changes in federal regulations or best practices. Each training course is developed by BLR lawyers, industry experts, and instructional designers who have experience across a wealth of industries, topics, and compliance areas.

Courses keep participants interested with engaging audio, built-in exercises, and key points to remember. At the completion of every course, individuals take a quiz designed to test for competency in all the course material presented. Quiz results and course completion times are automatically recorded.

Every course can be tailored with supporting and custom documents. BLR provides supporting documents for courses that include complete slide show notes and the answer key for the included quiz. As the administrator, you have the option of displaying uploaded documents and requiring review before the session begins. This is especially useful for company policies or worksite-specific information. Supporting materials can be added, edited, or removed at any time.
