Huddle Up for Safety!

Read about a VPP site that is committed to safety and demonstrates that commitment every day.

At Cherry Aerospace, a global leader in the design and manufacture of fastening systems for the aerospace industry, the key to safety and health success is a direct approach to hazard elimination. Risks are found and fixed with employees actively involved in the process.

One of the tools that promotes employee involvement is what’s known as a safety huddle.

Safety specialist Sam McHalffey says that a safety huddle is a several-minute session held before the start of a shift or during the first hour. Employees and team leaders come together to discuss a safety topic provided by the safety department.

Typical huddle topics include hand safety, forklift safety, and eye protection. A different aspect of the topic is covered each day of the week. At the end of the week, employees take an oral quiz to assess what they’ve learned.

Great news! BLR’s renowned Safety.BLR.com® website now has even more time-saving features. Take our no-cost site tour! Or better yet, try it at no cost or obligation for a full 2 weeks.

Safety Alerts

Safety alerts are another valuable training tool used at Cherry Aerospace. Alerts are e-mail messages sent by a supervisor immediately following an injury, recordable incident, near miss, or incident requiring first aid.

The short write-up describes:

  • What happened
  • Causes, if known at that point
  • Corrective action taken

Safety alerts are later discussed during safety huddles.

The effectiveness of safety huddles and alerts is verified by members of the site’s safety committee. They routinely take to the shop floor to ask co-workers about recent huddle topics and lessons learned.
