Evaluate Your Hearing Conservation Program

Here’s a checklist developed by NIOSH to help you evaluate your hearing conservation program. Use it to benchmark your progress and identify where improvement is needed.

Training and Education

  • Has hearing protection training been conducted at least once this year?
  • Is the training delivered by a qualified instructor?
  • Was the success of each training program evaluated?
  • Is the content revised periodically?
  • Are managers and supervisors directly involved?
  • Are posters, regulations, handouts, and employee newsletters used as supplements?
  • Are personal counseling sessions conducted for employees who have problems with hearing protection devices or who show hearing threshold shift?

Supervisor Involvement

  • Have supervisors been provided with the knowledge required to supervise the use and care of hearing protectors by their employees?
  • Do supervisors wear hearing protection in appropriate areas?

Think you have no time to train? Think again. BLR’s 7-Minute Safety Trainer helps you fulfill key OSHA-required training tasks in as little as 7 minutes. Try it at no cost and see!

  • Have supervisors been counseled when employees resist wearing hearing protection or fail to show up for hearing tests?
  • Are disciplinary actions for failing to wear hearing protect or show up for tests enforced?

Program Administration

  • Have there been changes in workplace noise hazards? If so, have policies been modified to reflect those changes?
  • Have there been changes in federal or state regulations? If so, have policies been modified to reflect those changes?
  • Are copies of policies and guidelines regarding the hearing conservation program available to those who implement program elements?
  • Are necessary materials and supplies ordered promptly?
  • Do procurement personnel override requests for specific hearing protectors or other devices? If so, have corrective steps been taken?
  • Is the performance of key personnel responsible for implementing and monitoring the hearing conservation program periodically evaluated? Are corrective actions taken as needed?
