Q&A: CAS Numbers for Silica Rule

Recently, a subscriber asked the following question:

Where can I find a list of all CAS numbers that correspond to the final ruling on crystalline silica for general industry? I notice new exposure levels are talked about but not linked to a chemical/CAS number.

This was our response:

The final rule identifies respirable crystalline silica CAS numbers for shipyards and construction found in specific regulations at 29 CFR 1915.1000 and 29 CFR 1926.55. However, OSHA in the final rule states that the CAS number is for information only. Enforcement is based on the substance name.

Although not mentioned in the respirable crystalline silica final rule for general industry, 29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z lists these air contaminants with the same CAS numbers.

The regulations at 29 CFR 1910.1053 (respirable crystalline silica) do not list CAS numbers. However, the rule does specify the action level of airborne respirable silica dust as 25 micrograms per cubic meter of air and a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air.
