EHS Daily Advisor this week wrote about keeping lone workers safe. In a recent report, the National Safety Council estimates that there are 53 million lone workers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. With that in mind, the Song of the Week is “So Lonely,” a 1978 single from the Police.
A few years before they became one of the biggest rock bands in the world, the Police were a trio out of London that had just released their debut album Outlandos d’Amour in November 1978. The album’s release was preceded by two singles, “Roxanne” and “Can’t Stand Losing You.” But the Police’s fusing of new wave and reggae didn’t click in the UK right away.
“So Lonely” was the third single off Outlandos d’Amour and didn’t chart on its initial release, but made it to #6 in the UK when it was released again. It took some time and touring in North America for the band and the album to make a dent in the charts.
The Police continued to gradually expand their reach with each successive album, achieving more and more success until by 1983 when Synchronicity came out, they were indeed the biggest band going. The band split up a few years later and lead singer Sting went on to a hugely successful solo career. Other than a reunion tour in 2007-2008, the Police have been inactive since.
